I don't believe in culture ... I believe in encounters. -- Gilles Deleuze

The artist has spent several years obsessively discovering new articulations of urban form, focusing especially on disinvested signage on streets around Baton Rouge. Informed by Cartier’s day job as a state librarian, this collection proposes entirely new typologies at the merger of unnoticed entropic form and processual categorization. Although his photos are clearly located in a clinical vernacular, his focus on ruin and dissolution, often capturing and stalling the moment at which form departs into pre-semiosis, has a certain political resonance this month, too.
