Meat Meet 29: Alex V. Cook

Alex V. Cook is a musician and author from Baton Rouge, LA. He co-founded the rock band The Rakers in 2013 and his instrumental project Museumgoer in 2018 and has written two books published by LSU Press. He is a compulsive creator who has found social media a suitable ephemeral platform for the drawings and songs that come to him. The problem is: the ephemeral always bleeds into the permanent. #inktober seems like a fun thing to do until November comes and you’ve still got the pen in your hand.

Back in the 90’s when he exhibited paintings in area alternative galleries, he was heavily inspired by this statement from one of his favorite artists at the time.

“Painting relates to both art and life. Neither can be made (I try to act in the gap between the two)” – Robert Rauschenberg

This notion of art being an active part of one’s life and through it, one’s life being open to influence still guides, or at least fuels, his practice as a songwriter.

This show combines projections of the portraits he draws of real and imagined people, storytelling and the one-person band music he performs on social media (though he might pull in some of his co-horts from the Rakers to flesh this out.) It’s intention is to tie up loose ends of his creative process but the reality is that it just opens a bigger can of worms. This will be the debut performance and first public iteration of this piece.
