Going To See A Man About A Horse

The exhibition explores Black Sites, or “Sigh/tes,” as both a poetic(s) and an imperative.

Press Release here

Artist Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste returns to their native city where they offer a new multi-sited engagement around ongoing themes that are central to their practice. At two locations — 1600 Government St and a second, decided-upon-but-not-yet-public site — the artist presents a series of performances that continue their work with decommissioned police sound technologies.

These works are presented alongside “mules,” a series of sculptural configurations where a collection of charged objects, built by the artist over a 10-year period using eBay, prompts questions about the efficacy and limits of contemporary and historic systems of value and speculation as they relate to bodies, objects, and sites.

The artist will offer a performance, at an undisclosed location, on Saturday February 1st, 4pm. Viewers must first meet up at 3pm in the parking area for the Scotlandville Parkway  at 3200 Harding Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70813

A symposium featuring the artist in conversation with RC Clarke (New Orleans), Dr. Thomas Stanley (George Mason), Chris Taylor (Land Arts of the American West, Texas Tech), and Mat Keel (Yes We Cannibal / LSU) will take place at 1600 Government St on Sunday February 2nd, 2-4 pm, in Baton Rouge.

The exhibition will also coincide with the debut of a forthcoming print atlas of real and imagined Black Sigh/tes created by the artist for the event. It will include a new essay by Andrea Andersson of Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art and Thought (New Orleans) and the transcription of a conversation between the artist and activist Laramie Griffin (eVOLVe). It will also will take place during the artist’s tenure as the inaugural fellow for Triple Canopy (New York City).

The atlas may be pre-ordered and will ship around March 15th, 2025.
