Broadmoor High School Students

“When I step on the school’s campus I am overwhelmed with depression. The atmosphere here is depressing. Other students and some teachers look stressed out and unhappy. The buildings are falling apart and the way the staff treats us—it’s like a prison. You have to make your school experience here fun with your friends and it’s like you can’t even do that.”

Broadmoor High School students from Mx. Ray’s Art and Photography classes showcase works of art exploring the conditions of their physical learning environment, resistance, peace, dreams and cultural differences with the collectively chosen title, “No Body Wants to be Here.” The work is a result of student led discussions and projects over the 2021-2022 school year that examined their individual high school experiences.

The visual work includes 35mm black and white film prints and colorful canvas paintings. Selected students’ work will also be on view temporarily at Baton Rouge Gallery and the Shaw Center.

Broadmoor High School was founded in 1960 and is a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. 25 million dollar renovation plans for the school are projected to begin in 2027-2028. The school currently hosts a demographic of primarily Black, Hispanic and Asian students.
